My coding journey officially began in 2021, but my curiosity in tech started in 2017. I opened my GitHub account, inspired by designs on Pinterest that led me to creators’ GitHub repositories. At first, the code looked like hieroglyphs—impressive and unfamiliar. Still, I didn’t see it as impossible to learn. It was more about breaking out of the mindset that coding wasn’t ‘for me.’ Growing up in Africa, there’s a stereotype that computers are for boys, and I rarely encountered women pursuing coding or tech fields. Even at university, where I studied public relations, I only saw a few women in computer science compared to countless men. This environment shaped my perspective, but it didn’t stop my curiosity.
In 2023, I joined SheCodes, a global community of women breaking
stereotypes and venturing into coding with genuine curiosity and passion.
Through this program, I honed my skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, GitHub,
and hosting, while connecting with others who shared the same enthusiasm
for creating and learning. On my own, I explored coding further by building
concepts for my business and working with clients. It’s been a rewarding
experience to collaborate with people who are passionate about their vision
and help bring their ideas to life with creativity and curiosity. Coding, for me,
has been as exciting as it is challenging—it’s a constant puzzle,
but one I truly enjoy solving.
One of the most meaningful projects I worked on was building a website for
my church in a rural part of Kenya. With over 30 million smartphone users in
the country, I saw how valuable it could be for the church to adopt technology
to connect better with its community. Many people in rural areas face language
barriers or lack access to tools designed for their needs. This project helped
me see that websites aren’t just for big corporations or urban spaces—they can
empower smaller communities to communicate and share their stories more effectively.
Before diving into web development, I worked in public relations, gaining experience
in graphic design, photography, and curating social media content. From capturing
moments at events to crafting messages that resonated with audiences, I enjoyed the
blend of storytelling and design. These skills now complement my approach to web
development, where I focus on creating user-friendly, visually appealing designs
that reflect the client’s message and goals.
In 2024, I launched my own website development business. Through my exploration and beyond,
I’m committed to using technology to make meaningful connections. I’m always open to
collaborations and love projects that challenge me to learn and grow.
